NASA’nın planına göre, istasyonun Dünya’ya düşürülmesi için yörüngeden çıkarıcı nitelikte yeni bir uzay aracı geliştirilecek ve bu araç bir çekici işlevi görerek istasyonu Dünya atmosferine taşıyacak.
NASA, uzay istasyonunu yörüngesinden çekip gezegenimize gönderecek kadar güçlü bir araç olan ‘uzay römorkörü’ tasarımı yapan her şirkete ödeme yapacak. Bunun için 1 milyar dolarlık bütçe ayrılmış durumda.
Ajans, uzay römorkörünü ABD Deorbit Aracı (USDV) olarak adlandırıyor. Bu araç, istasyonu Dünya yüzeyinin 442 km yukarısından yaklaşık 120 km yüksekliğe itecek ve burada Pasifik Okyanusu’na son inişine başlayacak.
Harvard Üniversitesi’nden astrofizikçi Jonathan McDowell, söz konusu büyük planla ilgili şunları söyledi:
